What Six Things Babies Need

There are certain pieces of equipment that every new baby needs. Actually some of these things need to be ready before the new baby arrives, such as a crib and a car seat. Others can be acquired after your baby arrives home.

What are these six things that your new baby will need? The first and perhaps most important is a car seat. In many places this is required by law and a hospital will not even let the baby go home unless the parents have a car seat that meets current safety standards.

This is one item that your baby will need at least two of before they are old enough to ride in a car without it. The first car seat will be one that faces backwards. Eventually, probably sometime before your baby is one year old, he or she will graduate to a forward facing car seat.

In some areas it is required that they sit in a car seat until they are six years old and a certain weight and height. In that case, they might need a third car seat, called a booster seat, made especially for older children.

Another piece of equipment you are going to need is a crib. Even if the baby sleeps with you at night, a crib is a nice, safe place to let the baby sleep for naps during the day. There are some safety features the crib should have such as a mattress that fits the crib snugly on all four sides, guardrails that are 26 inches above the top of the mattress, slats that are no more than 2.375 apart, and a bumper to keep the babys legs and arms out of the slats.

A baby monitor is nice so you can hear the baby from anywhere in the house, but its not a necessity. It can give you peace of mind knowing you will hear the baby if you take the speaker with you outside while you are doing yard work or something outdoors.

Another item that is really nice to have is a bouncy seat. Babies really enjoy sitting up a little in a seat that bounces slightly. Eventually they will be old enough to play with the various toys that are attached to the bar in front of them. This is one thing that is highly recommended by experienced moms.

The last piece of equipment that many moms and dads find very valuable for a baby is a sling or backpack. A sling is a great way for mom to be able to keep her baby with her while she is working around the house. Be careful, though, that you dont use it too much or it could cause back or neck problems. Also be sure that the backpack or sling fits the adult really well.

These are the six pieces of equipment that moms and dads agree are either necessary for their baby's safety or are simply great to have available to make parenting easier.

The Tormek Grinder

If, like me, you use traditional hand tools you know how important it is to sharpen them. The more work you do using your own motive force and wits the more you become aware of the value of a sharp chisel or saw.

A conventional grinder, seen in engineering workshops, is not ideal for sharpening woodworking tools. The razoredge that you are trying to create quickly overheats, goes blue and the steel loses its temper. Its too late to dip it in water, the damage is done. The water was there to prevent this from happening not for remedying the damage. The temper (hardness) of the edge is lost and can only be replaced by careful heating to the correct temperature.

The Tormek is a slow running water-cooled machine that comes in two sizes and is far better for this job. When you come to think of it, it is very similar to the ones the old joiners used; large sandstone wheel, sometimes turned by hand, sometimes treadle operated, often running in a water bath. Ive never used one, but imagine that getting the cutting angle right was a bit of a problem, especially when smoking a pipe with a silver cap on it and trying to look cool for a sepia print.

The Tormek is set up with a jig for helping you to get the appropriate cutting angle for the blade. The stone gets worn but can be levelled and brought back to pristine condition with a diamond truing tool, one of the attachments.

Probably the best feature of the Tormek is the range of jigs that can be used with it; axe heads, scissors, and planer blades are amongst the items that make life easy. The one I wouldnt be without on a desert island with a live three-pin socket is for gouges and turning cutters. Once youve remembered which way up it goes, it effortlessly gives you a perfect machined edge on a gouge. Try doing that on an old, hand operated stone, while smoking a pipe and saying cheese.

How To Use Marinades To Take The Taste Of The Food You Cook To Another Level

I am considered to be a very good cook by all of my friends and family. I have been cooking since the age of nine or so and therefore have a lot of experience in the kitchen and on the grill. I can tell you without hesitation that when it comes to cooking any kind of meat that the marinade you use as well as the time you allow the meat to soak in it makes all the difference in the flavor and tenderness.

Marinades are just a simple way to prepare certain foods that you want to have an extra kick to. Marinades to meats, serve two different purposes to tenderize and to give more flavor. Less fatty foods have a blander taste than most steaks and such. Marinades are just an easy way to tenderize and add a lot more flavor.

To make a marinade you need something of acidic base with herbs and vinegar to make the meats tasty. A marinade with a little bit of chili powder, garlic and oregano with give the food you are a making sort of a Mexican taste. Maybe for an Asian marinade some ginger and sesame seeds with a little soy sauce and hot sauce. A lot of sodas give great taste as well such as sprite goes good with chicken and coca cola is another.

The different foods you may be making are different from each other so you might need a couple of different sauces. Marinades with an acidic base give both flavor and tenderization. These marinades with acidic bases tenderize by unraveling the protein strands in the meats and fish in which you are marinating. When you are using an acidic base marinade never use aluminum or such because it will cause discoloration in the food and might cause it to have a bad taste so just use glass or other plates rather than aluminum.

The other type of marinade is dry marinade. These types are usually made of dry spices and can be rubbed right into the meats which you are trying to add flavor to. This will enhance the flavor but will not do to good as a tenderizer.

The longer you leave food and meats to marinade the more flavor and tender your food is going to be. If you have steaks it is good to either buy a 30 minute marinade or get a better marinade and let it sit and soak in the marinade all night until the next day.

Leftover marinades are useful for sauces but they need to be cooked to a heat that will kill any bacteria that grew over night. These sauces are good to add to fish steak and other foods. Just be sure to kill all the bacteria before you use the leftover marinades.

Barbeque recipes using this grill can include fresh sirloin steak, filet mignon, or just plain hamburger patties. Whip out your recipes book and see which seasoning goes best with hamburgers. Going Metric with Electric Conduits

The electrical conduit is a vital part of any wiring effort. It serves as the outer protection of wires or wire bundles and is measured on a metric scale.

Electrical conduit refers to the tubing that contains electrical cable and wiring. Conduit serves a variety of purpose. It keeps the electrical cable contained and orderly. It protects the cables and provides fire protection where the cables pass through walls. Conduit is also intended to protect wiring from moisture.

Electrical conduit comes in several different types. EMT or electrical metallic tubing is a common type of metal conduit. There is also flexible metal conduit, galvanized rigid conduit, and intermediate metal conduit. The galvanized rigid conduit (GRC) is sometimes made with aluminum. The most common non-metallic conduit is made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

Prior to 2002, The National Electric Code (NEC) specified conduit sizes in the inch-pound measurement system also known as the English system. This created certain problems as the majority of the world used the International System of Units (SI) which is also called the metric system of measurement. The Code was changed in 2002 to include both systems.

This was done to make the NEC compatible with NFPA standards. NFPA is the National Fire Protection Association. NFPA uses the SI system of measurement. The idea was also to make the NEC more suitable for use in electrical codes around the world. This is another example of the impact of the increasingly global economy on standards and codes in the United States. Electrical conduit is still produced in both English and SI sizes.

The conversion of English measurements to SI sizes has caused some problems where extremely precise tolerances are necessary for proper connection. This has led to a division between critical and non-critical conversions in the codes. It is assumed in the years to come the SI system will replace the English system as the standard size measurement units in electrical conduit. There has been resistance to a conversion to SI in certain other areas, but the pressure of adhering to International codes and standards should provide the push to overcome lingering resistance.

Barbecue Tools- Required For A Successful Barbecue

There are a number of varieties of tools available for the grilling of barbecues. They may be basic or complex. Some of the tools are expensive too. Based upon the basic steps in barbecuing the tools which are essential for barbecuing are categorized. Those tools include:

1) The first tool being the barbecue grill which is the basic essential without which the barbecuing can not be done.

2) Barbecue spatula is very essential to flip the food stuff. It is especially of help in preparing burgers and meat. This prevents the meat from falling apart while flipping them over.

3) Barbecue tongs are very helpful to grab the food stuff like sausages and hot dogs which tend to roll around over the grill. This helps to keep control over the food stuff and also ensures even cooking.

4) Barbecue forks have two tines and are about a foot long. They are helpful for flipping chicken or beef.

5) For applying the barbecue sauces etc a barbecue basting brush will be used. It will have a long handle which helps to apply sauces when the meat is on the grill.

6) Barbecue cleaning brush or wire brush is essential for cleaning the grills making it free from the residue coal.

7) Spray on grill cleaner helps to remove residues after extinguishing the coal.

There are other miscellaneous tools which are needed for barbecuing. They are:

1) Matches or butane lighter with a long neck is needed if the grill does not have an automatic igniter.

2) Bottle opener for opening the bottle tops.

3) Cooks Apron made of sturdy cotton guards the wearer from the hazards of barbecuing like flying sparks, splattering foods etc.

4) Fuels are indispensable for using the barbecue. The fuels may be wood, briquettes, charcoal, newspaper or gas.

5) Grill scraper is needed to scrape off any residue of cooked food crumbs from the grill.

6) Spray bottle is of help to spray the cleaning liquid to the different parts of the grill. It is better if the spray bottle has an adjustable nozzle which is able to shoot nearly 10 feet.

7) Fire extinguisher is handy in case of emergency even though it is not an essential tool to turn off the fire on the grill

8) Meat thermometer is very helpful to check whether the meat is done. The instant read thermometer will be a fork like device which can be inserted into the meat and it will give the internal temperature.

9) Oven mitts are resistant to heat and fire, so it helps to protect the hands while cooking and also making emergency adjustments in the grill.

10) Cooking oil and clean cotton cloth is used to grease the grill which helps in easier cleaning up of the grills.

11) Carving board can be made of plastic, metal or wood. There should not be pores in the board since it will harbor harmful organisms.

12) Charcoal container should be air tight and moisture tight.

13)Side table gives extra space for working.

Chocolate Cookies - Baking That Perfect Chocolate Cookie

There is no better cookie in the world than a well-made chocolate cookie. Read on to find out how to make the perfect chocolate cookie.

The Perfect Chocolate Cookie

The best chocolate cookie is the cocoa drop cookie. Not only are they delicious, but they are easy to make as well.

The ingredients required for this recipe are: cup butter, softened; cup shortening; 1 cup sugar; 1 egg; cup buttermilk; 1 tsp vanilla; 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour; tsp baking soda; tsp salt; cup cocoa powder, unsweetened; and 1 cup of chopped pecans.

First, cream the shortening and butter with sugar; beat in egg. Stir in the buttermilk and vanilla next, and then sift the dry ingredients together and add to the first mixture. Stir in the pecans, and chill the cookie dough for about an hour. Use a teaspoon to drop the dough onto a greased baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches between the cookies. Bake in a preheated 400F oven for about 8-10 minutes, or until set. Then cool and frost with a simple chocolate or vanilla icing if desired.

Shortbread Cookie Recipe

Another great recipe is the chocolate covered shortbread cookie recipe. For this you will need: 8 ounces butter at room temperature; cup powdered sugar; 2 cups all-purpose flour; teaspoon baking powder; 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted; and teaspoon vanilla extract.

Combine all ingredients; knead with your hands to made sure they are well mixed, press into lightly buttered pans, and bake at 325F for about 20 minutes. Cut into wedges while they are still warm or break them apart.
